Kampala is Uganda’s capital city and a major contemporary urban center in Africa. It boasts an impressive theater and arts district, delicious food and a thriving culture that’s worthy of at least one visit. Luckily, it’s also pretty affordable for travelers on a budget.
Café Javas is a casual, coffee-themed restaurant perfect for breakfast or brunch. The menu primarily features European fare, so you can expect the typical bread and eggs. A meal will cost $10.
Start exploring the city at Kasubi Tombs. The UNESCO World Heritage site is the official burial ground for members of the Baganda royal family. It’s an important spiritual and political site and showcases some unique architecture. The entrance fee is less than $2.

Begin the afternoon with a stop at the Ndere Center. This cultural center offers great insight into local traditions, and here you can take a quick cooking or dance class and mingle with locals. Bring $10. Next, swing by one of the many local craft markets to help the local economy and grab a few souvenirs. You can expect to drop $10 here.
Before dinner you’ll definitely want to seek out the Uganda Martyrs Catholic Shrine Namugongo. This unique and stunning building pays tribute to the Ugandan Martyrs murdered by a former king. Inside you can buy a quick tour for only $5.
Finally, end with dinner at Mediterraneo. Though not African cuisine, it’s easily one of the most relaxing and delightful eateries in Kampala. A meal will cost $20.
